Racchiuso ormai nel bosco, scrigno dell'antica memoria, un luogo fuori dal tempo ci racconta la Fossato di Vico romana, allora Helvillum. Questo è il ponte di San Giovanni, così chiamato per la vicina omonima chiesa, guado attraverso il quale la via Flaminia, arteria voluta da Gaio Flaminio Nepote nel 220 a.C., superava il torrente Rigo, che ancora oggi scorre placidamente sotto gli imperituri blocchi che compongono la struttura. La strada qui si biforcava, permettendo al viaggiatore di proseguire il cammino verso settentrione, e verso le attuali Sigillo e Scheggia, oppure deviare verso Ancona.
La strada, utilizzata probabilmente dalle popolazioni locali ben prima dell'arrivo dei romani, viene ristrutturata in epoca augustea e utilizzata anche nel medioevo, quando attorno al luogo si sviluppa la leggenda secondo la quale, di tanto in tanto, un'entità giungerebbe a disturbare i viandanti.

SAINT JOHN BRIDGE
We are just a few steps away from the junction that leads to Ancona: more than two thousand years have passed and yet the road follows almost exactly the same route. Now enclosed in the woods, a treasure of ancient memory and out of time tells us about the Roman Fossato di Vico, then Helvillum. This is the bridge of San Giovanni, so called for the nearby church with the same name, a ford through which the Flaminia Street, an artery commissioned by Gaius Flaminius Nepos in 220 BC, crossed the Rigo stream, which still today flows placidly under the imperishable blocks that make up structure. The road forked here, allowing the traveller to continue the journey northwards, and towards the current Sigillo and Scheggia, or to deviate towards Ancona.
The road, probably used by the local populations well before the arrival of the Romans, was restructured in the Augustan period and also used in the Middle Ages, when a legend developed around the place according to which, from time to time, an entity would come to disturb the wayfarers.
