Deve il suo nome a un Fonte di Santa Maria appunto, presente nella rubrica CXI degli Statuti due-trecenteschi fossatani situato un po’ più a sud lungo la salita che dalla via Flaminia antica porta al Castello. Tra le funzioni medievali del monastero va ricordata quella che proibiva di lavorare il sabato dopo che aveva suonato a vespro la sua campana. E ancora il compito attribuito alla Badessa di custodire una delle tre chiavi, le altre due erano in consegna dei monasteri di Santa Caterina e di San Benedetto, di una democratica cassetta delle lamentele chiusa appunto da tre distinte serrature. Della sua architettura originaria resta ben poco a seguito d’interventi di restauro posteriori poco attenti al rispetto della sua originalità.

BENEDICTINE MONASTERY OF SANTA MARIA DEL FONTE
Going up towards the Castle of Fossato, just outside the walls there is the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria del Fonte dating back to around 1290. It owes its name to a Fonte di Santa Maria, mentioned in the CXI section of the two- / fourteenth-century Statutes of Fossato, that was located a little further south along the slope that leads from the ancient Flaminia Street to the Castle. Among the medieval functions of the monastery, we should mention the one that forbade working on Saturdays after its bell had rung at vespers. Worth mentioning is also one of the three keys, the other two belonged to the monasteries of Saint Catherine and Saint Benedict, that used to lock a very democratic complaints box closed precisely by three distinct locks and guarded by the Abbess of this monastery. After some restoration interventions that pay little attention to respecting its originality, very little remains of its original architecture.
