Grazie agli statuti medievali sappiamo che qui si teneva uno dei mercati cittadini, rigidamente regolamentato, al quale presiedeva anche il vicario cittadino, con l'obbligo di ascoltare eventuali lamentele e, se necessario, amministrare la giustizia.
La facciata semplice e ben conservata, con i suoi archi a sesto acuto, custodisce un'iscrizione recante la data del 1337. All'interno gli affreschi tre-quattrocenteschi di scuola eugubina, tra cui Ottaviano Nelli, forse suo nonno Mello da Gubbio e il maestro di San Verecondo.
Il fascino della struttura, pienamente inserita nel contesto medievale, è amplificato dall'ombrosa vegetazione che sembra in parte celarla allo sguardo.

ABBATIAL CHURCH OF SAINT BENEDICT
The Benedictine abbey church, just below the castle walls, was probably built in the 13th century shortly after the medieval nucleus of the village and also had the function of a hospital for pilgrims. The Medieval Statutes explain that one of the strictly regulated city markets was held here, over which the city vicar also presided, with the obligation to listen to any complaints and, if necessary, administer justice.
The simple and well-preserved facade, with its pointed arches, houses an inscription bearing the date 1337. Inside, there are the fourteenth/fifteenth-century frescoes of the Gubbio school, to which Ottaviano Nelli da Gubbio, perhaps his grandfather Mello from Gubbio and the master of San Verecondo belonged.
The charm of the structure, fully inserted in the medieval context, is amplified by the shady vegetation which seems to partly hide it from the eye.
