Dove oggi la strada sale in modo agevole verso il centro storico, anticamente non esistevano vie transitabili; solo quattro accessi, le quattro antiche porte di entrata al castello (Porta del Castello a sud, Porta del Serrone a sud, Porta Portella ad est e Portanova a nord), permettevano di raggiungere il Borgo. Le torri di guardia che si ergevano lungo il perimetro tenevano d'occhio tutta la vallata. Sotto le mura una ripida e scoscesa collina rendeva Fossato di Vico imprendibile: stando alla leggenda solo pochissimi riuscirono mai ad entrarvi con la forza e solo Cesare Borgia, il Valentino, ebbe modo di violare il castello ma, secondo la leggenda, pare fosse stato aiutato da un traditore che gli lanciò le chiavi dalla torre.

MEDIEVAL WALLS
In the past, the medieval walls ranged around the castle following the shape of the hill. Where today the road climbs easily towards the historical centre, in ancient times there were no thoroughfares; only four ancient entrance doors to the castle (Porta del Castello to the south, Porta del Serrone to the south, Porta Portella to the east and Portanova to the north), allowed to reach the Borgo. The watchtowers that stood along the perimeter kept an eye on the whole valley. Under the walls a steep and craggy hill made Fossato di Vico unassailable: only very few ever managed to enter it by force and only Cesare Borgia, the Valentino, was able to violate the castle but, legend has it, it seems that he was helped by a traitor who threw him the keys from the tower.
