Il Roccaccio, questo il suo nome oggi, vede verosimilmente la sua nascita durante gli scontri tra longobardi e bizantini: i romani d'oriente, con la costituzione del cosiddetto Corridoio Bizantino, riuscirono a mantenere un dominio sulla Penisola, seppur ridotto, e uno dei confini passava proprio per Fossato, che deriverebbe il suo nome dal greco Fossaton, ovvero fortificazione in altura.
L'edificio nel medioevo sarebbe stato inglobato nel nascente borgo, che nei primi anni del '200 inizia a prendere forma, e sarà la sede di un castellano, menzionato anche negli Statuti.
Il tempo ci ha lasciato poche evidenze e possiamo solo immaginare come fosse al massimo del suo splendore. Gli scavi archeologi effettuati ai suoi piedi hanno riportato alla luce sepolture altomedievali, confermando come il nucleo primitivo del castello di Fossato di Vico scaturisca proprio da questa fortificazione d'altura.

THE ROCCACCIO
The only enemy to defy for the solitary remains of the fortress is now the wind that blows from the Apennine gorge, although the building used to have a more important defense function for centuries. This building is now called Roccaccio, and it was probably built during the clashes between the Lombards and the Byzantines: the Eastern Romans, with the establishment of the so-called Byzantine Corridor, managed to dominate the Peninsula, of which one of the borders passed right through Fossato. The name Fossato comes from the Greek Fossaton - fortification on high ground.
In the Middle Ages, this building used to house a castellan, as mentioned in the Statutes, and was incorporated into the growing village, which began to take shape in the early 1200s.
Time has left us little evidence and we can only imagine how it used to be in the past. The archaeological excavations have brought to light early medieval burials, confirming how the primitive nucleus of the castle of Fossato di Vico springs from this hill fort.
