Sono costituite da tre locali duecenteschi, comunicanti tra loro e scavati nella roccia che è ben visibile in diversi punti del pavimento. Le pareti e le volte robuste sono in pietra e il pavimento ora mattonato era originariamente in nuda terra. Ma non sono state carceri di altissima sicurezza se racconta il vero il rapporto del caporale P. Benni datato 26 settembre 1826, il quale riferisce al Vicario Foraneo che il fornaio Nasoni di Fossato, incarcerato perché sorpreso a frequentare la casa di una donna alquanto chiacchierata, “evase nonostante la porta era chiusa ed inchiavata…”. I locali delle Carceri oggi sono usati a scopo espositivo e conviviale quasi a stravolgerne l’uso che traspare dalla loro definizione e incuriosire tutti coloro che le visitano.

THE PRISONS
Walking up Via Mazzini towards the church of San Sebastiano, we find the Prisons, which according to archival documents were used for this function in the papal age. They consist of three thirteenth-century rooms, communicating with each other and dug into the rock which is clearly visible in various points of the floor. The robust walls and vaults are in stone and the now bricked floor was originally bare earth. However, they weren't very high security prisons if the report by corporal P. Benni dated 26 September 1826 tells the truth: he reported to the Vicar Forane that the baker Nasoni di Fossato, imprisoned because he was surprised to frequent the house of a woman of ill repute, "escaped despite the door being closed and locked up...". The premises of the Prisons today are used for exhibition and convivial purposes as if to distort the use that transpires from their definition and to intrigue all those who visit them.
